What is BodyRhythm?

BodyRhythm® is a body-oriented music system that uses rhythm, movement, sound, and presence to support self-awareness, nervous system regulation, and authentic human connection.

The method offers a grounded, professional framework for group facilitation, designed for practitioners who value embodied learning over abstract theory.

Rather than focusing on concepts alone, BodyRhythm works directly with the body as the primary instrument — cultivating perception, timing, containment, and relational awareness through lived experience.

BodyRhythm is used in therapeutic, educational, and facilitation contexts where presence, safety, and embodied intelligence matter.

About the Founder & Facilitator

Pieter van Pletzen is a music therapist, percussionist, instrument maker, and facilitator with a lifelong background in rhythm-based practices.

Raised in South Africa, Pieter spent many years traveling and working across African cultures, studying traditional rhythm systems, song, and embodied musical practices within various tribal contexts. This early immersion in ethnomusicology and lived musical traditions shaped his understanding of rhythm as a relational and regulating force — not merely a performance skill.

He later moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where he studied Music Therapy and Neurological Music Therapy, integrating clinical knowledge with his deep experiential background as a percussionist and song-based facilitator.

Drawing from decades of practice across cultural, therapeutic, and educational environments, Pieter developed BodyRhythm® as a structured system that bridges:

  • Traditional rhythm wisdom

  • Modern therapeutic understanding

  • Practical group facilitation skills

Pieter personally facilitates and guides the BodyRhythm Intensive Certification, ensuring depth, continuity, and integrity throughout the training.

Core Principles

The foundation of the BodyRhythm method is built on four non-negotiable ethical and professional pillars.

01
Body before concept

Prioritizing physical experience and sensory grounding over intellectual understanding. We start with the felt sense of the body.

02
Regulation before expression

Establishing nervous system safety as a prerequisite for rhythmic expression. Regulation is the ground for connection.

03
Safety before intensity

Depth is achieved through stability. We prioritize safe containment and professional boundaries over emotional peak experiences.

04
Presence before performance

Focusing on authentic moment-to-moment experience and deep presence, rather than achieving a specific aesthetic or outcome.

The Four-Element Movement System

A foundational framework used in BodyRhythm to map regulation and expression. Each element offers a specific quality of movement and sound to support professional facilitation and self-awareness.

Earth

The foundation of safety. Focus on grounding, physical presence, and the cultivation of inner structure and regulation.

Water

The flow of connection. Exploring rhythmic attunement, adaptability, and emotional resonance in movement.

Fire

The spark of drive. Engaging with transformation, intensity, and the clearing of boundaries in expression.

Air

The essence of clarity. Focus on mobility, lightness, and the professional overview of the group field.
